Cancel Culture

You have probably heard the term, "cancel culture." According to Wikipedia, "Cancel culture or call-out culture is a modern form of ostracism in which someone is thrust out of social or professional circles – whether it be online, on social media, or in person. Those subject to this ostracism are said to have been 'cancelled'." A business can be "cancelled" for supporting a president. Even our healthcare workers, when COVID started, were called, "heroes" and more recently, those who chose not to get vaccinated, fell from "hero to zero." If you don't agree with a celebrity or business and their opinion, you “cancel” them. The cancel culture group will often use shaming. As someone put it, "Cancel culture hangs on to the sin and gets rid of the person, leaving no room for compassion, mercy, grace, forgiveness, or restoration."

I am sure Satan loves this cancel culture - it lines up with his way of thinking. I am sure Satan loves the division, after all, he has tried to do this since his fall from Heaven. Scripture warns us that Satan is the "father of lies". John 8: 44, "You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies."

Satan can not retaliate against God so he goes after God's children - beginning with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. Not only did this cause a strained relationship with God but also with each other. Adam and Eve were the first humans to turn against each other when Adam blamed Eve for giving him the fruit. Genesis 3: 12, "The man said, 'The woman you put here with me—she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.'” I think he blamed God too because he said, "the woman YOU put here with me." Satan does not care what is right and wrong and tricks us into believing the same thing. He can justify anything.

Thanks be to Jesus that He, too, has a cancel culture for His children! Colossians 2: 13-14, "When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the charge of our legal indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross." Jesus CANCELLED our sins! When we repent and ask forgiveness, He cancels all of our mistakes, sins, guilt and shame. And He comforts us with mercy, grace and forgiveness. He restores our soul!
