What Are Our Children Learning By the Way We Treat Our Wives

Husbands, how do you want your daughter's future husband to treat her. How do you want him to speak to her? How do you want him to make her feel? Are you treating her mom the same way? Are you teaching your son how to treat his wife?

In 1 Peter 3: 7, the apostle Peter wrote, "Husbands, in the same way be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker partner and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers." Verse 1 says, "Wives, respect and obey your husbands in the same way" so that men will want to know God. When a husband is a godly man he will treat his wife with such respect that they will each want to submit to each other. Ephesians 5: 21, "Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ." It is all about what we put into our marriage!

A Christian husband must submit to the needs of his wife, being sensitive to her physical and emotional needs while being respectful. Ephesians 5: 25-28, "Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless. In this same way, husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself."

"...and treat them with respect as the weaker partner..." A wife is not weaker spiritually or intellectually but physically and sometimes emotionally. Being "weaker" is not negative - God designed us as companions. Our marriage should be one of the best gifts life has to offer. Colossians 3: 19, "Husbands, love your wives and do not be harsh with them." Peter is saying to respect their wives as equal partners in the marriage. This is how a man can win his wife to Jesus and become her friend!

Your children are learning what a marriage should look like by the way you treat your wife.
