Weed & Feed

The other day as I was working in my yard I saw the weed and feed and, like always, my mind goes to a blog. Weed and feed is a universal name given to lawn chemicals that have the purpose of strengthening the lawn by killing weeds. "It generally improves your lawn’s ability to absorb water and food and adds necessary nutrients which promote healthy growth.

A healthy lawn, in turn, discourages weed propagation...A foundational link to your lawn’s health is providing protection from the weeds that can threaten its very existence."

Immediately I thought we could package God's Word with their miraculous statement. God's Word strengthens us by killing the weeds in our life. It DOES improve our life by absorbing the living water and bread of life that promote healthy growth. It definitely discourages "weed" propagation. God's Word, as the foundation in our life, does provide protection from the "weeds" that can threaten our lives.

Due to so much rain I quit watering my flowers as often. Last week, in the extreme heat, I lost a plant and several others looked bad. I also dd not get outside and pull the weeds every week like I normally do and they had multiplied. My plants were begging for water. James compared our hearts to gardens in James 1: 21, "Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you." When the Holy Spirit lives inside of us, God's Word will take root. For us to blossom, we must take care of our hearts everyday, no matter the season we are in!

I have this one weed that grows tall, in the middle of my azaleas, and has thorns on it. I have to dig it up to get the bulb out of the soil. It takes root and grows fast and multiplies. Isn't that how the weeds of our life are. As I tried to unearth this big weed I realized how sin and the "weeds" in my life can take over so fast and choke out good things. I spend so much time on something like a weed - that just takes up time and space. I kept thinking if I had of pulled this up sooner, it would have been easier. If we wait too long, we can end up covering up our paths with brier patches. We can lose our way. When we stay in God's Word we can stay on the path of life. Psalm 16: 11, "You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand."

Is our time and energy going into something that is growing fruits of the Spirit? Galatians 5: 22-23, "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control." If not, look close because it may be a weed. Pull that weed by the root before it grows and chokes out the good fruit we are trying to grow. Matthew 7: 18, "A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit."

Keep rooted in God's Word and watch yourself blossom. Isaiah 58: 11, "The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail."

Do you need to get rid of some pesky weeds? Maybe it is time to weed and feed your heart!
