Valentines

Writer: Jill Jarrell NewsomeJill Jarrell Newsome

I spent so much time sending Valentines cards when I was growing up. I would carefully select who got what card and open them in the same order! In 2024, Americans spent $25.8 billion on Valentine's Day. God didn’t spend billions of dollars on us, He sacrificed His only Son which is priceless! This goodness is for every one whether we are single, married, divorced, separated, etc. The best kind of love is God's love! I think it is wonderful that we recognize a day to take the time to show affection and to tell those we care about that we love them. But remember, 1 John 4: 19, "We love because he first loved us."

Saturday, Valentines will be over and we'll go back to our daily grind and the focus on love goes out with the candy wrappers and dead roses! This happens because there is such an emphasis on a temporary, emotionally driven feeling we call love. God sends us a very different message of love in Isaiah 54: 10. "'Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,' says the Lord, who has compassion on you." God's love is not fleeting! Hebrews 13: 8, "Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever." Hebrews 13: 5, "'Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.'" His love is everlasting, unselfish and unconditional!

I love quality time with my children - that is the best gift and I know my Father wants quality time with me! Mark 12: 30, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength." Give God your heart through Jesus Christ. Make God your priority and spend some quality time with Him. Praise Him for all the blessings He has poured on you and yours! Psalm 34: 8, "Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the one who takes refuge in him." Happy Valentine's Day!
