Stars Can't Shine Without Darkness

Someone told us to be sure to come out to the ocean and see the stars - that they are very bright. We went around nine o'clock one night and we were disappointed because they were not that bright. In fact, it wasn't that dark. We went back later when it was darker and the stars were beautiful. Stars can't shine without darkness.

I love to see how the stars can light up the sky. When we lived on the ICWW the stars were beautiful because there was no light pollution. I used to get up some nights and go stand on my deck because it was so bright and beautiful it looked like we left the deck light on. When God created the earth He decorated the dark atmosphere with bright lights.  Stars show God's creativity and He uses Light to teach us about light and darkness. I am always amazed at His power to sustain the stars in place. And He is faithful to brighten up the sky every evening.

Psalm 147: 4-5, "He determines the number of the stars and calls them each by name. Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit." When I go outside and stand at the ocean or look up at the sky, it is easy to realize how small I am in this life. Everything is so expansive you feel insignificant. Isaiah 40: 26, "Lift your eyes and look to the heavens: Who created all these? He who brings out the starry host one by one, and calls them each by name. Because of his great power and mighty strength, not one of them is missing." God knows every star by name. He knows when one falls.

Sometimes I wonder how God can be mindful of me when there are so many other people for Him to be concerned about. How can He keep up? Psalm 8: 3-4, "When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?" While we may feel insignificant according to God's Word we are not. God created us. He lives in our hearts. We are His children. God doesn't love us because of our achievements but because we are His.

Go outside and look up at the stars. Start praising God that He considers you more amazing than the stars He placed in the sky. Trust in His faithfulness. Just as He brings out the bright stars night after night, He will bring you out of whatever darkness you face. Be quiet and still. Revel in this beautiful masterpiece and know that you are God's most beautiful masterpiece!
