For a long time I did not feel comfortable using the word "righteous". Righteous is an adjective that describes someone as being morally right. I think being "right" is what bothered me. No one is always right. But the spiritual definition of righteousness is living in a right relationship with God, others, and creation. If you are right with God, you are righteous.
Righteousness is a free gift from God. 2 Corinthians 5: 21, "God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." Righteousness comes ONLY through faith in Jesus. Ephesians 5: 8-10, "For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord."
The Bible shows us that God’s promises and blessings abound for the righteous. No person can be righteous on their own ability or strength no matter how good they are or how hard they may try. You are righteous right now, not when you get your temper under control, not when you let the guilt go, not when do do better but right now. You are righteous not because of what you did but what He did! Only by faith in the blood of Jesus that He paid the ultimate price for our sin, are we proclaimed “righteous.”
