I found I was comparing myself to someone who wrote eloquently. They used words I have never heard of. Much of what was said I was too simple to understand. I found myself not wanting him to read what I wrote because I was too simple. Later I would learn that, like me, a lot of people want it simple. I was reminded of this when I heard Psalm 119: 130-131 recently. "The unfolding of your words gives light; it gives understanding to the simple. I open my mouth and pant, longing for your commands."
We are to have child like faith and trust God without question while being on guard against being simple minded and gullible. So how could someone as simple as me understand Scripture, let alone write? God's Word was written for His servants to have a hunger and a longing for more. God created the language, our thoughts and our speech. He pours eternal wisdom into us and His grace equips us with His Word. He did this so that as we follow His Word, we will have victory over sin and temptation. In this verse I think the Psalmist is overwhelmed by the magnificence of God's Word! Because of this he obeys and stays in the Word finding treasures of Truth.
The very first Word that was spoken was by God as He created the earth. Genesis 1: 3, "And God said, 'Let there be light,' and there was light." As we study God's Word, He brings understanding and revelation to us. He allows it to enter our hearts and minds and become a part of us. We open up our mouth and pant because we long for more of God's Word. It is our spiritual nourishment and satisfies our spiritual hunger.
The word of God is a light to our path and the more we seek after His Truth the more the Lord opens up our understanding. Psalm 119: 105, "Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path." We cannot get caught up in the wisdom of the world. The ways of the Lord are higher.
Isaiah 55: 8-9, "'For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,' declares the Lord. 'As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.'" For me, it always comes back to trust. If He calls me to it, He sees me through it. He always, always, always gives us what we need. Praise God that He gives us simple people understanding to unfold His Word and find great treasures in His Truth!
