Out Of The Mouths Of Babes

Writer: Jill Jarrell NewsomeJill Jarrell Newsome

A Sunday school teacher decided to have her young class memorize one of the most quoted passages in the Bible - Psalm 23. She gave the youngsters a month to learn the chapter.

Little Ricky was excited about the task but he just couldn’t remember the Psalm. After much practice, he could barely get past the first line. On the day that the kids were scheduled to recite Psalm 23 in front of the congregation, Ricky was so nervous. When it was his turn, he stepped up to the microphone and said proudly, “The Lord is my Shepherd, and that’s all I need to know.”

Amen! Out of the mouths of babes! When I was in the Holy Land I saw a shepherd walking along the side of hills with his flock following behind him. It made me think of our Good Shepherd guiding while the flock depends on Him and trusts Him. David, a young shepherd, wrote Psalm 23. The youngest of eight sons, he had the lowly job spending days and nights in the hills taking care of the flock. David had a revelation of who God is—his shepherd. Our faith is simple - a relationship of trust between us and our Shepherd.

I have a shepherd and lack nothing. He provides all I need. He takes me to beautiful, safe, nourishing places. He quenches my thirst. He gives me rest. He guides me along the right paths. During the dark times of life, He doesn't let the fear take over. He is with me always, even in the valley. He protects me and pulls me back into the flock when I am too weak. No matter what is going on, He sustains and protects me. He blesses me with an abundant life. There is no where I can go that I will not be filled with God's goodness and love - for my entire life. And when this life is over I will live with Him forever and ever!
