Jesus Take The Wheel

Writer: Jill Jarrell NewsomeJill Jarrell Newsome

Years ago I was traveling on I-40 through Greensboro when my cruise control got stuck and I could not slow down. I hit my brakes but nothing happened. I saw the cars in front of me and knew I was going to hit them. I was flashing my lights, screaming and praying. I could go to the median but then what - head on? I literally saw a quick video of my whole life - I guess that is what people mean when they say they saw their life flash before their lives. I knew I was going to die but I didn't want to hurt anyone else. My small dog was crying and had gotten in the floor board. I turned my car off at one point and I tried the emergency break but no control. I really don't know what happened but I was finally able to stop. I pulled over in the median and lost it. A truck driver had witnessed I was in trouble, stopped and consoled me. He disconnected my cruise control and followed me to my exit because I didn't want to drive.

Now I believe it was a miracle - whatever happened. Sometimes in life we have no control. We have no control over our health, a loved one's sickness or death, other people's choices, in some cases our finances or job and the list goes on. Control means security to us and it means we decide what and when things happen. When we are not in control we don't feel calm or safe. 2 Chronicles 20: 15, "He said: 'Listen, Ling Jehoshaphat and all who live in Judah and Jerusalem! This is what the Lord says to you: ‘Do not be afraid or discouraged because of this vast army. For the battle is not yours, but God's.’” God is working on our behalf even if we do not see it or feel it. He may have closed doors because it is time for us to move forward.

We will never be in control! Country singer, Carrie Underwood, sang, "Jesus, Take The Wheel", "Jesus take the wheel...take it from my hands...cause I can't do this on my own...I'm letting go...so give me one more chance to save me from this road I'm on...Jesus take the wheel". We can not do this life on our own and God has the best way but He is waiting for us to surrender. If we allow Him to take the wheel He will never steer us wrong!
