I am leaving this afternoon for a 72 hour retreat and looking forward to being "unplugged." So I have to post today for tomorrow.
My cousin and I were talking today and I was telling her about something I felt God was laying on my heart. It has something to do with what I feel He revealed to me as a teenager. Sometimes I feel I am watching things play out in slow motion. This morning on my walk I felt an excitement and a restlessness. I talked to God about it and feel He is pushing me to go to the next step. While that scares me I am very excited because He continues to blow my mind. I also question if that is my words I am feeling so I ask Him to send signs to confirm what I believe is Him. My cousin was asking how do you know if it is Him.
I believe God speaks to me through my heart. I do not "hear" His voice but I hear his words in my heart. I think the more you grow in your relationship with God and listen (that is my hard part) to Him, the more you hear Him. Prayer is a two way conversation and I do not think He wants me to do all of the talking. Hebrews 4: 12, "For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart." The Bible is God's Word and He speaks to us through it. Have you ever noticed that you read a scripture that you have read many times but this time it really "speaks to you"? In the past you never thought twice about it. That is because God's Word is the Living Word because it is the message given to us from the living God. Hebrews 3: 2, " See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God."
God works through His living Word and the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 6: 17, "Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." The Bible tells us that the Bible is God's Word. John 1:1, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." 2 Timothy 3: 16, "All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness..." You know God. He lives in you. He is always with us. John 14: 16-17, "And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you." The Holy Spirit is the way we hear God's voice!
When you talk to someone you speak and then you usually wait for a response. You listen. It is the same with God. Have a conversation. Listen. Prepare your heart to listen through prayer. Tell God, "Speak Lord, Your servant is listening." 1 Samuel 3: 9, "So Eli told Samuel, 'Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place." If we do this on a regular basis we will begin to hear God's voice. It may not be audible. I think God speaks through His Word, our thoughts, conversations with others, circumstances, nature,
If you are a Christian then you have the Holy Spirit available to you. Tell God you are listening and the Holy Spirit will prepare your heart to hear God's voice.
