I am always amazed at how nudges work. I know when I feel like God is nudging me to make contact with someone or laying something on my heart to do something but I am really amazed when someone does something for me and I KNOW it is from God! So many times I feel this and I continue to be amazed as if it is the very first time! My most recent holy nudge was from my new friend, Libby, who I did not know at the time.
On January 4, I had to give a “preview” talk for a retreat I would be serving on. I am always blown away with God’s multitasking. I am a full time job and then you add all of my prayer requests - just for my family. And then I bet y'all have some too! Among all of that, God coordinates for Libby to be on that team with me. After I previewed my talk - Libby came to me and said we needed to talk. What a sweet person she was to make me feel better knowing I was nervous. But that week she emailed me about a speaking “opportunity!” Do you know the definition of “opportunity”? It is “a set of circumstances that makes it possible to do something.” That meant God coordinated all of the circumstances while working on all my stuff, 50 women at the retreat, the team and that is just a few of us in Wilmington!
1 John 4:13 reminds us, “And God has given us his Spirit as proof that we live in him and he in us." It is the Holy Spirit who nudged me to serve on that team. I had not served on a team in a while and had to really pray about it. Soon, I felt God's nudge to serve. So God nudged someone else to approach me and then He nudged me to commit. Holy nudges are not news. Moses knew what a holy nudge from God was. Acts 7: 23, "Now when he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren, the children of Israel." Moses realized that he was Hebrew which was difficult after seeing how the Egyptians treated his people. He probably wanted to bury those feelings but he did not dismiss what he felt in his heart.
Webster’s defines nudge as “to push gently with the elbow especially to get someone’s attention.” The nudge usually comes gently....like you would imagine an "elbow" from the Holy Spirit! We are being told we need to make that phone call, make that visit, write that note and sometimes it feels urgent to stop everything and pray for that certain someone right then! I know I feel nudges often but I cannot imagine how many I do not feel, hear or ignore it? When I am busy I probably pass it on as a fleeting thought. The sad thing is that we miss out on special blessings that God had for us when we do not follow through with the nudge. If we say He is the Lord of our life then shouldn't we let Him lead us? He wants what is best for us. Jeremiah 29: 11, "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope." Shouldn't we trust Him who knows us better than we know ourselves? Romans 8: 27, "... He knows us far better than we know ourselves." He tells us He will direct us. Psalm 32: 8, "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye." Don't miss out on the amazing opportunities God has waiting on you!
I can tell you there have been so many times if I would not have acted on God's nudge I would have missed out on a big blessing! When God gives you the nudge - you budge!
