Help Me With My Thoughts, God

For years I had someone in my life that was not very nice to me. Looking back, I know that person was insecure but that was hard to remember when I was being mistreated and being made fun of. I remember before I would see this person I would tell God, "you have to go with me." I dreaded going. Taking the high road was not easy. I would ask God to watch my mouth so that I would not say something I shouldn't. I did not want to have to apologize! Now, you know, I thought ugly things and I am still trying to work on that part! But I know I could not take the high road without God's help! This is just one example of many, many, many times I have had to ask God to watch my mouth!

Yesterday, we talked about the Christmas tree bringing me hope, right now, because of all the things it represents. One of the things came from John 14: 16, "And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever—" Because the Spirit of God lives in us, we have the power, through Him, to be a better person and take the high road. That verse begins with John 14: 15, "If you love me, keep my commands." So I guess that is where we need to start today. Do we really love God? Are we willing to take the high road for Him? Because if we are hurting, and not gong to Him for comfort, we will hurt others. God needs for us to show the face of Jesus - even when it is not easy. God has given us the spirit of truth in verse 16 and 17, "And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— the Spirit of truth...."

We know right from wrong. It does not matter if the world does not know we have the Spirit, if we have it, we know. We are responsible for our own actions. Again, we know right from wrong. John 14; 26, "But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you." We have a life coach right inside of us that is just waiting to be used!

David wrote a Psalm of praise to God, Psalm 19: 14, "May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer." If only I would say this every hour! Even once a day! You see, I can usually control my tongue but not my thoughts which penetrate my heart. OUCH! Let me repeat that, our thoughts penetrate our hearts. I know those thoughts are not pleasing to my Lord! That is horrible news but there is good news! The Holy Spirit can help me change my thoughts which will change my words and actions. And that is what God needs for us to do if we are going to try to change hearts in this broken world!

Let's talk about the elephant in the room! Politics! Let's talk about when we are "discussing" politics with someone. May our words be pleasing in God's eyes! May our words honor God! When we feel violated. May our words be pleasing to God. When we are in traffic and get cut off....may our words be pleasing to God. That is hard enough but we have to control those thoughts too! 1 Corinthians 2: 10-11, "...these are the things God has revealed to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who knows a person’s thoughts except their own spirit within them?..." The Spirit knows our thoughts!

This is so hard but we are told earlier in Psalm 18: 6, "In my distress I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help." God reveals Himself to us through Scripture. As we read God's Word, the Holy Spirit brings to light the things we need to change, improve on and work toward. If we care about our relationship with Jesus, then we want to honor Him. We will work hard not to let that sin get a hold in our lives. The only way to do this is to seek out God every day! Pray and ask the Holy Spirit to show us where we need to change. We must immerse ourselves in God's Word. Then, and only then will we find my thoughts more pleasing to God!
