Give Up And Look To God

Writer: Jill Jarrell NewsomeJill Jarrell Newsome

I have a relative that I am having to make tough decisions for and that is very hard for me. I came to the conclusion that this is the card I have been dealt. We all have things. When I went to God, He reminded me that He will make the decisions if I just come to Him. I do not know how it came my responsibility but what I do know is I will never regret this time. God will bless me with peace and blessings. I was sharing with Mom about my prayers and that God will give us the discernment to know what to do. With this came a lot of peace. So far, as I watch God work, I see, again, how faithful He is. All I have to do is love on this person and let them know they are worthy - God will do the rest!

Discernment is defined as to judge well. In Christian contexts, it is defined as "perception in the absence of judgment with a view to obtaining spiritual guidance and understanding." Someone said discernment is revelation knowledge, not head knowledge. I love that! I do not have the head knowledge for these decisions but one of my spiritual gifts is discernment. And this is the very reason I should be making these decisions, difficult or not.

God wants us to live by discernment. Romans 12: 2, "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." I was having a pity party because I was trying to figure everything out by myself and thinking of all of the "what if's". But when I fell apart and decided to give up and look up, I realized that I needed to exercise discernment. When we are willing to surrender and trust God, we are set free. In spite of the circumstances and the outcome, I will know God guided me. It takes the stress out of the decision because I can hold on to God's promise that it will be good and pleasing, again, no matter the outcome. I am trusting God because I do not know how or when God is going to accomplish what needs to be done but I do know God knows just what this person needs, the exact time this person needs it and He will do it! In the meantime, God is stretching mine and Mom's faith and helping us grow.

Discernment keeps us aligned with God. We need knowledge, understanding, wisdom and discernment. And we need to use it. Hosea 4: 6, "my people are destroyed from lack of knowledge. 'Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as my priests; because you have ignored the law of your God, I also will ignore your children.'" Solomon was the son of David and he followed in his father's footsteps. God came to King Solomon in a dream and asked what He could give him. The king could have asked for anything but he asked for more wisdom and to understanding to discern what is right. God was so pleased with his request that it was granted to him. 1 Kings 3: 10-12, "The Lord was pleased that Solomon had asked for this. So God said to him, “Since you have asked for this and not for long life or wealth for yourself....I will do what you have asked. I will give you a wise and discerning heart, so that there will never have been anyone like you, nor will there ever be. To live in God’s will, we must discern. He wants us to bring Him glory and He will bless us with joy and peace. Jesus will guide anyone who asks.
