From Mountain Top to Valley

Writer: Jill Jarrell NewsomeJill Jarrell Newsome

It seems sad to lose that mountain top experience but we are not meant to stay on the top of the mountain! If we did, we wouldn't appreciate it! A mountaintop experience is a "moment of significant revelation given by God, or a time of feeling especially close to God, or perhaps, like the disciples, an experience of seeing Jesus as never before." It is a gift of grace. Matthew 17: 2, "There he was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and his clothes became as white as the light."

If you have had a mountaintop experience you are transformed in the process. When we are with others and see God working and moving through their lives, we come home with a new passion for life. Over time we go back to our “normal” and sometimes find ourselves in the valley. We forget what it felt like to trust God. Proverbs 3: 5-6, "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight." We forget what God said to us about never leaving us or forsaking us. We forget how he wants what is best for us. Romans 8: 28, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” And we forget what we promised God in the midst of that mountain top experience.

If things are tough, we can't have thanksgiving and anxiety going on at the same time so start thanking Him! If something is bothering us, tell Him. 1 Peter 5:7 “…cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.” He will help us! Soak in the memory of what God revealed to us on the mountain top and it will remind us of our purpose in the valley.
