Finding Focus

Writer: Jill Jarrell NewsomeJill Jarrell Newsome

When my girls were little we would go on family bike rides. My youngest, Ivey, had the hardest time learning to look ahead even when she was talking to someone beside or behind her. One evening she turned her head to talk to someone and ran into a mailbox. She didn't get hurt but I think it really taught her that she had to focus on what was in front of her.

I am still learning that I crash when I take my focus off of God! In this world of distractions so many things have our focus. Is it your job, your family, your relationship, your finances, your success, your past, your future? Probably most anything other than our present! One of the hardest things I do is focus solely on God and not let the other things creep in. Even when I read my daily Bible reading I feel thoughts trying to creep in. I have to get centered first and when I do it is so rewarding! Psalm 16: 8, "I keep my eyes always on the Lord. With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken."

Scripture tells us we must stay focused on Jesus. John 15:5, "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing." We must remain connected to the True Vine in order to bear fruit! We can also learn from Peter who took his eyes off of Jesus while walking on water and began to sink. Matthew 14: 30, "But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, 'Lord, save me!'" When Peter took his focus off of Jesus, he let fear take over.

How can we stay spiritually focused? Set aside time for God each day and make it a priority to talk with Him, listen, study and worship. Do a distraction inventory and remove those you can. These can be certain people, television shows, habits, unconfessed sins, addictions, etc. We can use this new energy to redirect our focus on Jesus. Having a set schedule will help remind you and I have Scripture on my mirror, my refrigerator, on my walls at work, on my phone. Sometimes the verses change depending on the season. Deuteronomy 11: `18, 20, "Fix these words of mine in your hearts and minds; tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.[…] Write them on the door frames of your houses and on your gates…"

"Focus on God, He is the Solution."
