Faith Over Fear

Writer: Jill Jarrell NewsomeJill Jarrell Newsome

Read this next sentence twice and then close your eyes and think about it and put it in your heart! "Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go." Joshua 1: 9 Some days we just need to hold this truth in our heart!

Recently I read, "you're lying in bed trying to figure it all out and Jesus is saying, 'It is finished.' stop worrying. Unclench your jaw, drop your shoulders, relax your brow, and breathe deep. He has everything worked out for your good and His glory. You are in His hand." We are human so there are times we will be fearful. Different seasons bring fear including losing a job, sickness, loss of a loved one, a broken relationship and uncertain times. None of us know what tomorrow will bring but we are not to live in fear.

We have a choice to make. Live in fear or live in faith. Psalm 23: 4, "Even though I walk

through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff,

they comfort me." It always comes back to trust. We can trust God with anything and everything. Psalm 118: 6, "Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil,

for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me." Whatever season you are in, God will bring good from it. Romans 8: 28, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose." He knows us better than we know ourselves and He wants what is best for us. Jeremiah 29: 11, "For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."

I heard it explained like this. We get out of bed in the morning believing our legs will hold us up so we get up. We go to work believing we will get paid, so we go to work. We believe our brakes will stop our car so we drive. And I always say, we believe that a flower will grow so we plant a seed! If we can believe those things, we can believe God's Word! God can make things better than anything we can imagine. Isaiah 55:8-9, "'For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,' says the Lord. 'For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.'" How many times has He taken a bad situation and brought good from it? One of my favorite verses is Ephesians 3; 20, "Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us..." During the hard times, we have to hold on to these truths!

"Once a man was asked, 'what did you gain by regularly praying to God? The man replied, 'nothing...but let me tell you what I lost: anger, ego, greed, depression, insecurity, and fear.'" Choose faith over fear and trust God!
