Abram had a Spirit filled life even though he was living in a land destined to have constant conflict. He passed through the land to the place at Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. Shechem means “shoulder” which is a symbol of strength. Moreh means “instruction.” It is when we are taught the Word of God, by the Spirit of God, that we find the strength to live.
We have constant conflict in our lives that are named in the New Testament. They are lust, envy, jealousy, impatience, tempers, irritability and touchiness. We need a life of continual cleansing. Abram built an altar to the Lord as a place of cleansing. All of us need the cleansing of blood and the cross of Christ. Abram pitched his tent between Bethel and Ai. Bethel means “the house of God” and Ai means “ruin.” This is exactly where we live the Christian life, choosing between the things of God or the things of the flesh. We move toward Christ or self, but it can never be both.
Recently I heard, "we never end our walk when we have learned God’s lesson. Tomorrow there is another step to be taken." I love when the Spirit of God shows us we have achieved a victory. At times we want to settle down and enjoy a bit but God will never let us stop. Our life has to be a journey of continual progress! Thanks be to God.
